Quibble, the Moglin, has traveled the world several times over. He only put a few points into this cartography skill, but he is confident that his drawing accurately depicts the known continents. Our vast ever-growing world, is known fondly as LORE.
For far too long, players and devs alive have lamented over the lack of a proper world map. The travel menu was a temporary place holder.... never intended to last this long. So what was the hold up? A year or so ago, we had a working prototype of a 3D scrollable map that was, absolutely beautiful. There were two significant problems with it. First, it required a lot of programming and 3D art time that always got pushed onto the back-burner as we focused on the larger content releases. Second, it was EXTREMELY hard to update or change... which means once we did decide on a map structure, we were stuck with it. (Also, 3rd, it would have been a performance nightmare for slower phones, tablets, and PCs.) So, at our team meeting on Monday... we all were sick of waiting and decided to do something that we could implement... now. (Or at least in the next major release)
Llusion drew up a 2D map inspired by AdventureQuest World's Map (originally drawn by J6) which expanded the world and gave it several disconnected land masses. The world is big enough for there to be multiple Kingdoms, and plenty of room for villain controlled empires from the Frozen North, to the Sand Sea, to the multiple volcanic regions. The new City of Battleon to be located... where the heart of would be. Turns out, "Home is where the heart is" works bothways.
Initially, the map will be added to the travel screen as an image. So, at least when you travel around the world you can get a sense for what the world is. We feel this is the best 1st course of action because... we can do it. We can do it right now. And we REALLY want to see a map in game. Needless to say, step two is making the map scrollable and adding clickable regions on it that unlock after you have been there. For a long while we have had the ability to lock areas until you have either 1. Traveled to them or 2. Reach a high enough level that they unlock automatically. We are long overdue to simply add these requirements to the travel menu. Both to the one on your menu, and on the Travel Crystal.
A long, long time ago... when Dinosaurs still ruled the Earth, back in 2001... before I named it "AdventureQuest", the game was called L.O.R.E. or "Land of Rising Evil." This is why our world is referred to as Lore. The 1st incarnation of AdventureQuest 3D... back when it was going to be a 3D Flash game on the web (yes, this was actually a thing), was originally titled "Legend of Lore". Not sure why I am adding this to the post, but thought you might enjoy the trivia. The world is called Lore, and the continent itself has been referenced by a few different names depending on which game you played.
I am extremely happy with the map that Llusion created. It immediately filled my mind with wonder, and I instinctively started assigning locations and remapping our existing zones to better match it and be connected.Would love to hear your initial thoughts on the map too!
